Day In the Life Video Proposal

"Day in the Life" Video Proposal

For my project, I've decided to do a day in the life of my creations, a.k.a. the cast of my novel, Confessions of a Drag Queen and a Girl Named Dot. My first idea was to do a video of my own life, but it's pretty boring AND the majority of my life is spent creating these imaginary people. I spend a good chunk of my time writing, drawing, and talking about my "creations" on the internet, so needless to say, our lives are pretty much entwined anyway.

Making my characters "strange" isn't a terribly hard thing to do, considering that they're already my "imaginary friends". I first wanted to try a day in the life as THEY see it in the book, but decided that would be pretty much impossible, as I don't have five years to animate a day in their life. So it will be a day in their life AS my creations; that is, these figments of imagination that get to live through drawings and writing. This is how they spend a day with me: being written, being drawn, and being worked with in Photoshop.

What I Plan to Do

Visually, I will want to include some of myself in the work, because they are essentially an extension of myself. So I will film myself drawing/sketching so that my hand can be seen. This puts a real human presence in the work. I will also want to include some clips of myself looking through my drawings, sort of a way to show that this isn't just ONE day in the life of my characters, but this is how every day goes for them, days upon days upon days. This can be shown in the huge stack of paper that is drawings of them. However, much of my work is done on the computer, so it will need to be filmed too. I'll film myself writing, working on Photoshop, etc. As far as audio goes, I may narrate some of my stories or perhaps just type them so that the sound of the computer keys can be heard.

I like the aesthetics of the fade-in/fade-out. Since I don't want to film the whole two hours or so it takes to do a drawing from the beginning sketch to the finished product, the fade-in/fade-out will show a progression of time. It also has a dreamy kind of feel to it, which is perfect considering these guys are just figments of my imagination. Overlaying the typing on top of the images will help increase the creepy/strange vibe.
